Football

General Info

Participation in Orange County Pop Warner football programs provides an opportunity to all interested youth to learn football fundamentals and perform in an organized, supervised, and safety-oriented environment. Our program emphasizes the importance of teamwork, hardwork, and sportsmanship while building confidense for all participants in a positive atmosphere.

All football teams are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis so register early. Pop Warner has no tryouts or cuts and there is a mandatory rule that everyone participates for a certain number of plays in each game. Also, there is an age & weight matrix that ensures that our athletes compete with others of similar ages and sizes thus reducing the risk and reality of injuries.

All adults involved with direct contact with the athletes must pass an annual background check. All coaches are required to attend or complete a coaching clinic as well as having all head coaches (and many assistant coaches) CPR and first aid certified.

The 2009 Orange County Pop Warner season will begin August 1, 2009 and end mid-November 2009. The post season is from mid-November 2009 to mid-December 2009.

All football teams are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis so register early. Practices will be held at the field at Cane Creek Baptist Activities Center (6717 Orange Grove Road, Hillsborough 27278).

All equipment, uniforms (practice & game), and helmets are issued to each player (and must be returned) while the spirit pack provides a t-shirt, shorts, socks, & mouth guard.

Practices will be 10 hrs/wk (6-8 pm) for the first three weeks of August. The week of August 25th (start date of traditional schools), practices change to Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 5:45-7:45pm (Tiny-mites will only practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays with possible optional Mondays). Practices are held at the field at Cane Creek Baptist Activities Center (6717 Orange Grove Road, Hillsborough 27278).

There is a mandatory 20-hours conditioning requirement for football that must be fulfilled before the player will be allowed to participate in any games. All preseason, regular season and post-season games are played on Saturdays. Jamboree games (scrimmage games) usually take place the Saturday before the regular season opens. The regular season normally starts on the last Saturday in August (weather permitting). Please attempt to complete all family vacations before AUGUST 1st IF AT ALL POSSIBLE so that your player does not miss any playing time due to not having the mandatory 20 hours of conditioning.

Every year, the regular and bowl season begin on August 1st and run until mid-November. For Jr Peewee teams and older, regional and national post season continues through mid-December.

Game schedules are determined in mid-late August by the league board and OCPW posts the game schedules as soon as they are received. Game locations and times will vary depending on the age division. OCPW can travel to any of the other 12 association locations in the CFF league. Do not assume that all OCPW teams will play away games at the same location; that is usually not the case due to the varying number of teams per age division within the CFF league. However, OCPW makes every effort to have dates in which all our teams are scheduled to play at home on the same day (home games).

All equipment, uniforms (practice & game), and helmets are issued to each player (and must be returned). The mandatory spirit pack ($25) includes a t-shirt, shorts, socks, & mouth guard that your player keeps at the end of the season.

Parent volunteers are needed to help us make this program run successfully. There are various ways in which we require the help from parents/families. For example, we are required to provide play checking at both home and away games (this is done to maintain that every player gets his/her minimum number of required plays per game). In addition, other parent/family volunteers are required during home games in such areas as chains, clock management, announcer, gates, concessions, and merchandise sales.
